Origins and History
The Barcelona Vegan Fair was born spontaneously and informally in the winter of 2012, as an initiative by a small group of vegan artisans who made their products at home and sold them at vegan events. The aim was to support small artisans and local products, creating a community space to promote veganism in Barcelona. Over the past 12 years, the Fair has evolved, moving through different locations and formats, adapting to varying circumstances. Over 136 editions have been held to date, and the quality, presentation, and variety of products have continued to professionalize. Through its social and ethical focus, the Fair aims to contribute to the growth of veganism both globally and locally.
Territory, Diversity, Circular Economy, and Sustainability
The Vegan Fair promotes self-employment among exhibitor projects while meeting a social demand in the city for a cultural, sustainable, cooperative space free from animal cruelty. Here, ethical projects are supported, and information on veganism and related social movements is provided. In Catalonia, we find individuals from different countries creating artisanal products that reflect both their cultural heritage and local flavors. The Fair itself was started by a group of vegan individuals from diverse backgrounds. Cultural diversity at the Fair is a defining aspect, especially in its food offerings, featuring dishes from various countries adapted to veganism. The Fair strives to be an inclusive and welcoming space where everyone feels comfortable and safe, regardless of sexual orientation, origin, age, religion, or life philosophy. We have a recycling area, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own containers to avoid unnecessary waste. Exhibitors are asked to use biodegradable materials and avoid plastics. Some ventures work with upcycled materials, using sustainable practices. A vegan diet and lifestyle significantly reduces carbon footprint, greenhouse gases, and water use — critical social and global issues that need to be addressed.
